Some of the books I read during the early days of sobriety were very motivational. It was thanks to these books that I gave up the booze for good. As these books had such a huge influence on me, I thought I would share some more details with you. You can also use the links provided to buy the books from amazon.

I read this book long before I had decided to bin the booze for good. I did not drink every day and did not believe that I was an alcoholic. I did

would drink a lot. I would often wake up unable to remember parts of the evening. I often felt that I may have said or done something stupid. I was not yet ready to give up alcohol entirely. I knew deep down that I needed to make a change in the drinking department. After talking through my concerns with a friend, she recommended this book to me.

This book was not at all what I expected. I thought it may be a rather preachy and boring account of a woman’s drinking habits. I could not have been more wrong. Catherine’s story was uplifting, inspiring and extremely relatable. I felt as though I was reading my own memoir. The before and after stories were captivating and gave a true insight in to the world I was about to embark upon.I will forever be grateful to my friend for suggesting this book to me. It was one of the main drivers for my newfound sobriety. Reading this book made me realise that I was not alone in my experiences with alcohol. Perhaps a change in my lifestyle would not be so bad after all.

Mindful Drinking: How Cutting Down Can Change Your Life by Rosamund Dean

After reading Catherine Grays the unexpected Joy of being sober,I had made the decision to change my relationship with alcohol. As so much of my lifestyle consisted around parties, events and nights out with friends I was still not ready to give up entirely. I was however looking to reign it in.  “Mindful drinking – how cutting down can change your life” is a book that combines practical tips, scientific expertise and a sense of humour for a straight forward and realistic approach to cutting down alcohol. This is a great book if you would like to change your drinking habits without giving up entirely.

Sober as F*** by Sarah Ordo

This book changed my life! Dramatic but true. It was this book that made me come to terms with just how out of control my lifestyle was. I read this book on a flight to Dubai and it brought me to tears. It made me realise how flippant I had been about my drinking. Similar to Sarah I to had been a weekend binge drinker for all of my adult life.

In May 2015 Sarah was rushed to hospital after drugs and alcohol almost killed her. From this day Sarah quit her party lifestyle and started her journey to sobriety. Reading her story hit me hard as back in 2012 I had a very similar experience to hers. It was an August bank holiday weekend. I had met with friends in London to attend a music festival on the common. Fast-forward a few hours and I woke up alone in hospital with my wellingtons still on covered in heart monitors. The nurse asked me what I had taken and informed me that I was lucky to be alive. I had almost gone in to cardiac arrest and my body was literally shutting down on itself.

My lovely boyfriend (who at the time I and only been dating a couple of months) came to pick me up from hospital and took me back home. I could see the concern on his face that he did not think I had taken this scare seriously enough.  He was right. The next day I went back to the festival to party. Only now I realise just how ridiculous that was. What sort of crazy person goes back out partying the day after they have almost just died? That is how I was back in my wild days. I was completely naive to the fact that this was a serious incident.

Sarah’s story was the wake up call I needed and from the moment I closed that book I knew that my life was about to change. I could no longer down play my old drinking party lifestyle and needed to face the reality that I did not have a good relationship with alcohol.  Luckily, the book was very encouraging and left me feeling extremely positive about the future.

Unwasted- My lush sobriety by Sacha Z Scoblic

If you are looking for an accurate insight in to sobriety then look no further than this inspiring memoir by Sacha Z Scoblic. She is funny, entertaining and a terrific writer. 

As a girl who has been torn between the desire to get sober whist still wanting to remain the life and soul of the party I found Sacha’s story completely relatable. I could not put this book down and was able to finish it in just two sittings.

Blackout -remembering things, I drank to forget by Sarah Hepola

Blackout is a brutally honest memoir of a woman struggling with alcoholism. A laugh out loud funny, honest and heart-breaking account of her relationship with alcohol. I read this book straight after Sober as F*** and absolutely loved it. As someone who nearly always experienced blackouts when I drank, it was comforting to hear that I was not alone. I only knew too well that feeling of waking up with absolutely no idea of how you got home and constantly having to piece together the night before.

In her heart-warming story Sarah shares with you her story of hitting rock bottom and how she rose back up again through sobriety. An absolute triumph.

Kick the drink…. Easily By Jason Vale

I had always known Jason Vale to be the juice master. When I was given this book I expected to find a lot of juicing recipes and alcohol free cocktail ideas. I could not have been more wrong.

Jason Vales book looks at alcohol for what it really is and really puts our drinking habits in to perspective. A fantastic read for those who would like to reassess their relationship with alcohol. A must read for anyone interested in breaking free of the alcohol trap

The Sober Diaries: How one woman stopped drinking and started living by Clare Pooley

Clare Pooley is an amazing woman whom I have come to admire. In her ‘diary’ she takes you on her journey of leaving behind her successful career so that she can look after her family. Only to find that she quickly became overweight,depressed and drinking more than a bottle of wine a day out of boredom.

Clare tackles an extremely serious subject in this funny, informative and well-written book. A great read for anyone looking for a positive and uplifting look at how to bin the booze and start living life to the full!

    A great selection of books. I have read some of them. Would love to read the others. Blackout was an amazing read for me. Annie Grace’s “The Naked Mind” was the game changer for me. I found “Unwasted” triggering and couldn’t finish the book. All her fantasies of the last drink made me want to drink! Lol! Thanks for sharing.
